There aren't enough hours in the day when you're a mom.

Add in the "work" part of working mom, and... 😮‍💨  You want to give your family the best of you, but sometimes they end up with the leftovers

Everyone else's needs come before yours.

✔️ Kids are clean, fed, and in the care of a loving adult
✔️ Boss's expectations are met... most of the time
✔️ Partner feels loved... or at least knows you're trying
✔️ Even your pet gets to go for a walk before you sit down after work

That's what being a mom is all about, isn't it?

You wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. But, some days you're left feeling exhausted and a little neglected. When you sit down for the first time and it's 9:00pm, you're not even sure if you can do all the things again tomorrow.

You know you will...

But it would be nice if anyone realized how you're feeling.

We get to this place because we've prioritized kids, parter, pets, friends, family, and work over ourselves.

Is there actually another choice?

Yes, there is. Realistically, it doesn't look like it does on TV or Instagram. But if you ever want to feel like you again, you have to take some baby steps.

It starts with determining your priorities and setting some boundaries.

What Priorities and Boundaries Look Like in Real Life

  • One way I prioritize my own needs is to recognize that I'm an introvert. Sometimes I just need quiet, uninterrupted alone time. I give that to myself without feeling guilty. I also plan for it when I know I'll need it, because pushing through only makes me feel worse.

The boundary is my bedroom door. If my door is shut, my family knows not to ask me questions or ask me to make decisions.

  • My family is my #1 priority - my kids and my husband. I want them to know that, and feel it, so I let them know by setting boundaries

One boundary I set for myself is that I will be present and actively engaged during family time. No mindlessly scrolling on my phone, no checking email, no working, and no saying yes to things that take my time away from them.

Family time can flex a little. Sometimes I want to meet a friend for dinner, or I have a parent meeting in the evening. I still do those things, but they're intentional YES decisions rather than "sure, because I don't know how to say no" decisions.

I determine when I'll focus on being present every day - each member of my family gets my attention at some point every day. In the morning before school, when they get home from school, or during our bedtime routine. We also have family nights and date nights 1-2x a week.

say it with me...

I determine my priorities. I set my boundaries.

What is your #1 priority?

How do you make it your priority, every day, without feeling overwhelmed Limit the decisions and the concessions you need to make, and set boundaries

What boundaries can you set to help you prioritize it? It should be something you can implement long-term.

Setting boundaries sounds great. But, it's not always easy when you're used to saying YES to everything or winging it until you're completely overwhelmed.

This is a great article for working moms about how to set boundaries in a realistic way.
